WordPress has signed the Open Weights and American AI Leadership letter, joining more than 270 companies and organizations supporting the continued availability and development of open-weight AI models.
The letter calls on U.S. policymakers to avoid placing early restrictions on open-weight AI models models that can be downloaded, inspected, modified, and run on a developer’s or organization’s own infrastructure.
This approach reflects many of the principles that have helped open-source software grow: giving developers and researchers the freedom to study technology, experiment with it, adapt it to different needs, and contribute improvements back to the wider community.
The letter also encourages greater access to computing resources for startups and researchers, investment in shared datasets and evaluation tools, and maintaining a diverse AI ecosystem with both open and closed models.
For the WordPress community, this is an interesting development because AI is increasingly becoming part of how people create, publish, and work on the web. Supporting open AI models could give more developers, researchers, and creators the opportunity to experiment and build new tools without depending entirely on a small number of closed AI systems.
