As a WordPress plugin developer, I’ve always believed that 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 - 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲.
Before releasing or installing a plugin, there are so many things to think about:
🔐 Security
⚡ Performance
🧩 Compatibility
🧹 Coding standards
♿ Accessibility
🔒 Privacy
…and what the plugin does behind the scenes.
That’s why I’m genuinely impressed with 𝐏𝐥𝐮𝐠𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫.
I recently explored the latest version, and it has evolved far beyond a simple plugin scanner.
The biggest highlight for me is the jump from 72→125 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬, covering security, coding standards, performance, compatibility, privacy, and accessibility.
But what I really like is the deeper visibility:
→ 𝐀𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐭 - find potential issues
→ 𝐂𝐨𝐝𝐞 - understand what’s actually inside the plugin
→ 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐫 - see what it adds, stores, loads, and connects to
→ 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 - understand how the plugin is maintained over time
→ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 - put two plugins side-by-side
For plugin developers, this can be incredibly useful for 𝐩𝐫𝐞-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰, 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.
