Envato has announced that they are raising their commission to 50%, referring to "challenging marketing conditions"

Here are my thoughts:

  • The strategy may be to purge authors who are not generating enough revenue to reduce the operational burden
  • There is still value in authors staying on ThemeForest (unless the operational costs are too high)
  • The risk of ThemeForest shutting down has increased. It's time to take steps to mitigate that.
  • But it's time that authors start selling directly, like StylemixThemes have done so successfully since 2021

For digital products, the choice really depends on your business model:

  • Freemius works great if you want an all-in-one solution for licensing, payments, trials, analytics, and upgrade flows with minimal setup.
  • Easy Digital Downloads is ideal when your primary focus is selling WordPress plugins, themes, or software downloads in a lightweight and developer-friendly way.
  • WooCommerce Subscriptions is better if you already run a WooCommerce ecosystem or need more flexibility with subscriptions, bundles, and a larger extension ecosystem.

Each has strengths, so the “best” option depends on scalability, ownership, fees, and how much control you want over the customer experience.
